The City of Port Phillip Councillors’ vote on the proposed controversial Roadmap to Zero - Safe Travel Strategy and Action Plan (the “strategy”), previously scheduled for 17 June, has been deferred until the council meeting on the 5^th of August, reflecting the residents’ petition to have a longer period time to understand, reflect and comment on the strategy. The strategy has raised the issues of governance and trust in council. Unsurprisingly, more than 120 concerned residents attended a community meeting on 18^th May to express their concerns and to learn more. The fact that nearly 600 residents signed a petition requesting Council to delay adoption of the plan, as tabled at the meeting on 17 June, caused an extraordinary debate and an outburst of ‘points of order’ from councillors who falsely claimed residents speaking to the petition had made errors. One resident who attended the Council meeting on 17 June and spoke to her petition regarding the ‘Roadmap to Zero’ road safety strategy left the meeting feeling genuinely underwhelmed, frustrated and disappointed by both the process and the outcome. Nearly 600 residents supported a petition simply requesting that the strategy be delayed until more detailed information could be provided and genuine consultation undertaken. Despite this significant community concern, four councillors voted against delaying the strategy beyond the rescheduled date of 5 August (Council was expected to vote on the motion on 17 June). On Monday 29 June, Port Phillip Councillors voted against the interests of residents and business owners by supporting the bureaucrat’s recommendation to increase rates by 2.75%. Residents of Port Phillip campaigned for not increasing rates for the new financial year while maintaining the quality and accessibility of essential services.   Only three of the nine Councillors supported the rates freeze, thwarting hopes for immediate financial relief amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.  Read on to learn how each Councillor voted and why Council should be leaning into the hard work of finding efficiencies rather than simply continuing to tax and spend.
