St Kilda has no shortage of places to eat, but the real story of a neighbourhood isn’t told on a Saturday night — it’s told during the week. For many years now it has been apparent that there is a need  for a master plan for all our CoPP retail precincts that is both integrated and connected to each other. A plan would ensure proper greening, and a sophisticated amenity. More so has been the need for such a plan in Acland Street. Sadly, the last decade has been one of decline with a continuum of piecemeal attempts (call them “thought bubbles”) that instead of lifting the profile of the street has combined to make it increasingly an embarrassment. Local resident Rod reviews the history of Acland Street and what once made it a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike and offers some concrete suggestions on how to return the precinct to the sort of vitality it once possessed.
