Concern Over Lack of Detail in Council’s Plans – Call to Action

At a packed community meeting hosted by the Residents of Port Phillip on 18 May, around 120 residents provided feedback on Council’s ill-conceived Safe Travel Strategy and Action Plan.

Deputy Mayor Mears, Councillors Hardy and Jay heard residents’ concerns over the City of Port Phillip’s plans to introduce new bike lanes, remove carparking, one-way street conversions and reduce speed limits despite ongoing and overwhelming rejection of similar infrastructure by many residents over the past few years.

The resounding feedback is residents do not trust Council after having to deal with the failed pop-up bike lanes, plans to remove carparking and construct separated bike lanes in Inkerman Street and to replace two lanes of vehicle traffic with separated bike lanes in Kerferd Road.

Whilst residents support safer roads, they are calling for Councillors to delay the adoption of the Safe Travels policy at a Council Meeting on 17 June until the community has been fully informed about the location and design of road traffic infrastructure and new speed limits.
