Port Phillip Matters
A Port Phillip Story – Community Connection with South Port Day Links
Author: Clemens Unger, General Manager, South Port Day Links
For almost 40 years, South Port Day Links (SPDL) has been part of what makes the City of Port Phillip such a supportive and caring place to live. We’re a local not-for-profit, volunteer-powered organisation working every day to help older residents, people living with disability, and carers stay connected, independent and engaged right here in our neighbourhood.
At the heart of what we do is connection — whether it’s bringing someone to a medical appointment, helping them get out for a social lunch, or simply spending time together. Our core programs include:
🌟 DayLinks – Friendly volunteer drivers provide door-to-door transport across Port Phillip and nearby areas, helping people continue to live independently and participate in community life.
🌿 GardenMates – Volunteers help with light gardening, supporting clients to enjoy their outdoor spaces and maintain a sense of pride and wellbeing.
🐾 PetMates – For many older residents, pets are family. Our volunteers walk dogs and help care for companion animals, making sure both people and pets can enjoy life together.
🚶 WalkMates – A volunteer companion can join a client for a regular walk, offering both physical activity and social connection.
These programs are all possible because of local volunteers, generous donors and community partners. Every trip, every visit, and every friendly conversation helps reduce isolation and build belonging — something we know matters in every Port Phillip street and park.
If you want to know more about what we do, volunteer your time, or simply stay in touch with our work, please visit spdl.org.au or call our team on 9646 6362. We’re proud to be part of the vibrant community that makes the City Port Phillip such a great place to live, grow and age.
