Community Meeting: New Bike Lanes & 30 km Speed Limits
Author: Cameron (South Melbourne Resident)
Despite ongoing and overwhelming rejection by many residents over the past few years, the City of Port Phillip is again seeking to introduce new bike lanes in your local streets and reduce speed limits – cloaked as a “Safe Travel Strategy.”
Residents of Port Phillip will be hosting a meeting to inform local residents and gather community feedback on the council’s proposal.
Deputy Mayor Mears, Councillors Hardy and Jay have been invited to attend this meeting to hear your thoughts and engage with you more broadly.
We therefore invite you to participate in a Community Meeting – see details below.
Venue: Rising Sun Hotel (upstairs), 2 Raglan Street, South Melbourne
Time: 7:30pm to 8:30pm
Date: Monday 18th May 2026
RSVP: mail@ropp.org.au by 5pm Friday 15th May
Other: A ROPP sponsor will kindly provide drinks
Now is the time to act, rather than after the construction of new bicycle lanes and the introduction of 30 kph speed limits, we all remember the hassle from last time!
Councillors will vote on the Safe Travel Strategy and associated implementation plan at the Council Meeting on 17thJune 2026.
If you do not voice your concerns and without community opposition, the policy is expected to be adopted in June, and budget will be allocated to the plan i.e. your rates will be spent on this project.
You can also send your feedback to Councillors by email – see link for email addresses: https://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/about-the-council/who-we-are/your-councillors
