Cr Hardy Receives Support for Grand Prix Enhancements in Middle Park

Recently Council passed a motion put by Cr Rod Hardy to investigate an initiative to help business owners provide services for Grand Prix patrons by closing Armstrong Street in the Middle Park Village from Richardson St to Canterbury Road over the four days of the Grand Prix next year.

Currently the Middle Park Hotel is permitted to erect a marquee to provide drinks, and entertainment in Armstrong Street which is closed from Canterbury Road to Eskine Street during the four-day event. Cr Hardy’s  proposal would allow for other businesses to extend their trading out onto the street from Erskine Street to Richardson Street, to make the most of the increase in visitors and create an event atmosphere for all the village.

“I have spoken to many traders and residents and whilst this initiative has the support of the majority of the traders, the motion directs Council officers to undertake consultation with businesses and residents to understand the opportunities and impact of the proposal” said Cr Hardy.

Council officers are expected to investigate the impacts on businesses and residents such as traffic and waste management and portable toilets.

“Parking is an issue for residents who live close to the event, myself included and conversations are continuing about what improvements can be introduced next year. The next meeting is between the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and Council later this month. I will keep you updated regarding both the Armstrong Street proposal and parking management” said Cr Hardy.
